Isle of Staffa and Fingal's Cave

Early silver annular brooch by Alexander Ritchie, with Gaelic inscription A h'ule lat ha sona dhut' - translating literally as 'May all your days be happy'. Reverse has an interesting combination of separate impressed marks of 'AR', and recessed IONA stamp (usually both marks are recessed, or on later pieces both are impressed.) No hallmark. c.1920. Diameter 3.5".

Attractive and unusual Alexander Ritchie silver annular brooch depicting four interwoven birds - the original bird design can be found in the 8th century Book of Kells manuscript. Diameter 5cms. No hallmark, recessed marks of IONA and AR. Early 1920s.

Most attractive Alexander Ritchie silver ring-brooch with inscription 'Peace to Thee Iona' surrounding an Iona dove. Size approx 1.5" diameter. The reverse marks are in the form of a cross, and are AR IONA, crossing with ICA and Birmingham hallmark for 1937.

Most unusual Alexander Ritchie silver plaid brooch. It is an annular brooch shaped into an octagon, with a very Art Deco stark and basic attractive design. I would never have associated this brooch with Iona silverwork until I saw the reverse markings which are clearly AR IONA and a Glasgow hallmark for 1930. The ingenuity of Ritchie's work no doubt holds a few more unusual and little-known or one-off designs which may turn up in the future!

Large silver penannular brooch by Alexander Ritchie, from his 'unhallmarked period' c.1915-1920. Reverse marks are AR amd IONA.

Scarce chevron-patterned solid silver annular brooch by Alexander Ritchie, one of the few pieces I have seen which is only stamped AR IONA and Stg. Sil. (No hallmark or registration mark). Period 1920s-early 1930s. A known but rarely seen design.

Annular brooch with knotwork bosses between interlacing with beasts heads. A not often seen design. The reverse is marked with AR IONA and the AR 'spectacle mark' together with a Glasgow hallmark for 1930.

I haven't seen this one before - it is a copy of a medieval ring brooch. I don't think many were made. It is sterling silver and from Alex Ritchie's early unhallmarked period c.1910-1920. Just marked AR IONA. A very unusual design harping back several hundred years. Diameter approx 2".
