Iona Abbey from the south, with the
Isle of Mull and Ben More in the background

Very attractive pierced silver brooch by Alexander Ritchie, with a foliate design taken from McKinnon's cross shaft on Iona. A scarce brooch, and a fine example of Ritchie's design skill. Hallmarked for Glasgow 1928 with AR IONA and also the AR 'spectacle mark'. If you look under Iain MacCormick on this website, you can see a dark blue enamel and silver stylised version of this design, c.1948-50, continued by MacCormick after Alex Ritchie's death.

Very fine Alexander Ritchie silver and enamel shield brooch. A most unusual design, with foliate scroll work, and four enamel panels in two different shaded of blue. The reverse is marked AR IONA ICA and hallmarked for Birmingham 1938. A beautiful piece.

Unusual silver shield brooch by Alexander Ritchie, with intricate raised knot work circle surrounding a triskele central design. The reverse is stamped AR IONA together with the AR 'spectacle mark', and hallmark for Glasgow 1928.

Attractive sterling silver disc brooch with elaborate knotwork deign. The reverse just has a registration number and the impressed IONA mark with stamped AR initials. Pre-1931 period.

Long-ship design silver brooch by Alexander Ritchie. This one is a distinct variant from the usual long-ship brooches, and is a rare design. The reverse has the equally rare raised initials AER IONA (including Euphemia Ritchie), together with the AR 'spectacle mark', and a Glasgow hallmark of 1929.

Larger solid silver shield brooch by Alexander Ritchie - studded rim, with ornate interlacing birds and beasts surrounding a central knotwork boss. The reverse is just stamped Iona with conjoined letters AR. From Ritchie's early unhallmarked period c.1910-1915.
